This week, we’re shouting out to NYC’s hottest new approach to sustainable technology – The Lowline!

Inspired by the success of the High Line (an NYC elevated freight line converted into a stunning public park) a group called The Delancey Underground Project aims to create an underground green space using an abandoned trolley terminal beneath Delancey Street, on New York’s Lower East Side. The designers are planning to use cutting-edge green technology to enable a functional below-ground ecosystem; sunlight, reflected underground, would save electricity while allowing plants, trees, and grass to thrive.

It looks like their dreams may become a reality very soon; The Delancey Underground Project recently had a successful Kickstarter run back in April, and they are hosting events through the month of September to increase community interest in the project. Ultimately, the creators of the Lowline hope to “provide tremendous opportunities for creative expression, while challenging assumptions of the way humans work, live, commute, and interact”; this includes community programs such as art exhibits, farmers’ markets, and educational series. “This space will be more than a space,” says the project’s website. “It will generate community, and it will inspire in the way beautiful environments can inspire.”

Here at PeaceKeeper Cause-Metics, Earth Day (April 22) is kind of like our New Year’s: Everyone in the office makes an eco-friendly resolution, from volunteering at a local park to taking shorter showers. But with the Billion Acts Of Green campaign, we discovered a way to really make our resolutions count!

Billion Acts of Green is a campaign created by the Earth Day network, and it is currently the largest environmental service project on the planet. On the Billion Acts of Green website, users can pledge their own Act or choose from a list of Earth Day Favorites. Submissions on the site include eating more local food, picking up trash and recyclables, harvesting rainwater, and even cleaning up Malaysia’s waterfalls.

Auralís  Herrero Lugo took hold of Fashion Week yesterday Monday September 13, 2010, showcasing her eco-venture at 1pm. Her line Auralís comes out of Brooklyn, NY and is based in New York City and Puerto Rico. Pouring all of her creativity into this line, she is looking to rescue old artisanal and eco-conscious Puerto Rican crafts, along with making beautiful clothing. She divides her time between both places, making a family out of the community of workers on the collection.



Auralís creates timeless pieces for the modern woman full of eco-consciousness and a passion for beauty. She “designs for a better future, one garment at a time.” Using organic, sustainable, natural, or recycled fabrics like hemp, bamboo, organic cotton Auralís is changing the world for the better and keeping men and women feeling great about the choices they make and the clothing they wear.

From all of us here at PK, Happy 40th Earth Day! Today, April 22, 500 million people are celebrating the beauty and power of Mother Earth. We hope that you will join us in celebrating this eco-friendly holiday!

Earth Day was founded in 1962 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, who decided to organize a grassroots movement to save the environment. The movement spread quickly; in less than half a century, it is now celebrated in 175 countries, almost the entire world!

Every country celebrates Earth day in its own unique and wonderful way. In Thailand, monks in the Dhammakaya movement promote world peace through meditation, inviting people from all corners of the world to come to the Dhammakaya temple and meditate together. Spain holds the two-day Fira de la Tierra (Fair for the Earth), which includes music, dancing, a ‘visual arts concert’, and a public forum on sustainable energy. Here in New York City, Grand Central Station celebrates Earth Day for the entire week, with art from Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, live music, and organic (!) food.

It’s easy to celebrate Earth Day locally, even if there isn’t a big celebration going on where you live! Here are some of PeaceKeeper’s suggestions for living eco-friendly:

-REDUCE! Commute to work or school by walking, biking, or public transit. Not only does this cut back on air pollution (from car exhaust), but it’s also a great way to stay in shape!

-REUSE! Bring your own mug to Starbucks and your own bags to the supermarket. Tons of paper and plastic are wasted every year on disposable cups and bags. Also use stainless steel water bottles instead of buying Evian or Poland Spring. Not only are those plastic bottles wasteful, they also contain harmful chemicals that can infect the water you drink!

-Recycle! Who could forget? Visit www.recyclenow.com to find out how you can start recycling locally, what items you can and can’t recycle, and what all those funny triangles on the underside of your recycleables mean.

-Eat less meat. You don’t have to go all-vegetarian, but try to eat at least one meat-free meal a week. This cuts back on carbon emissions, which cuts back on global warming!

-Cut back on processed foods in general. Like with plastic water bottles, these contain chemicals that are often the last things you want in your body.
