Sewing Machine for Change
Monday, December 17th, 2007I just received an email about this program and wanted to share with everyone an awesome endeavor to help women and children in the northeastern corner of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mama Mado Beriu, Chairperson of Nyalebe Community Development Alliance (NGO) tells us about a small donation that was made, a sewing machine, that is the start of a new program to help build economic suffciency for the girls and boys in Nyalebe. Both a tailoring and carpentry program will be started and donations are needed for materials.
“Women do not have any source of income, they are just dependants who wait for their husbands to give them money for food and to meet their other demands. ”
“Many girls of girls of Nyalebe have been engaged in prostitution because when they drop out of school they do not have any stable source of income to sustain themselves. They end up going in for business which gives them a little money in return for sex. ”
“We believe that this project will mobilize and train also the boys in vocational skills and instill in them the attitude of being self sustained and support their families because if these boys do not have a stable source of income they will not be in position to send their kids to school and their kids too will have the same problem hence the vicious circle will continue. But if we intervene at this now, we shall be in position to break the vicious circle at an early stage.”
“Despite the difficulties, we build from our strengths and want to build our community’s social and business capacity, especially through improving the skills of the young. We are survivors and we will survive. ”
